The Punjab government has made it mandatory for all motorcycles in the province to have a valid fitness certificate in a move aimed at improving road safety and lowering accident rates.
As part of this initiative, the law has been amended to issue a one‑year fitness certificate after each motorcycle passes an official inspection. This new requirement is intended to ensure that motorcycles on the roads meet basic safety and maintenance standards.
The provincial Transport Department has urged the public to cooperate by bringing their motorbikes in for timely inspections to obtain the certificate. Authorities believe that stricter regulation of motorcycle conditions will play a significant role in preventing mechanical failures and reducing crashes.
In addition to the fitness certificate rule, the Punjab government has also introduced a province‑wide speed limit for motorcycles, capping speeds at 60 kilometers per hour. This new limit has already come into effect.
According to a notification issued by the Transport Department, anyone caught violating the speed limit will face fines or other legal action. The combined measures aim to protect riders and pedestrians alike by encouraging responsible driving and better‑maintained vehicles.
These decisions come amid rising concerns about traffic safety, as motorcycles are often involved in serious road accidents. Officials hope that the mandatory fitness checks, together with the new speed restrictions, will help create safer roads across Punjab and reduce the number of traffic‑related injuries and fatalities.
