Punjab Jails Appoint Psychologists to Enhance Inmate Mental Health Services

Punjab Jails

Punjab has taken another step forward in its comprehensive prison reforms by appointing senior and junior psychologists in jails across the province.

This initiative aims to address the long-neglected mental health needs of prisoners, marking a significant shift toward a more rehabilitative approach within the criminal justice system.

A cornerstone of this reform is the establishment of dedicated mental health centers in every prison. These centers will provide critical services, including psychological examinations, diagnoses, and consultations for inmates.

The objective is to ensure timely and adequate mental health support for all prisoners, reducing instances of violence, self-harm, and recidivism.

To enhance efficiency, prison psychologists will conduct mental health assessments for all new inmates within 24 hours of their arrival.

During these evaluations, prisoners will be categorized based on their crimes, criminal history, and personality traits. This system will allow psychologists to tailor counseling and rehabilitation plans effectively.

Special attention will be given to prisoners exhibiting violent tendencies, mental stress, or other psychological challenges. Adolescent and female inmates, who are often more vulnerable, will receive focused care.

In addition to direct prisoner care, psychologists will play a pivotal role in training prison staff. These training sessions will equip staff with the skills needed to manage inmates struggling with psychological issues, such as suicidal tendencies or addiction.

Psychologists will also contribute to parole boards by offering risk assessments and counseling, thereby influencing decisions related to prisoner release.

For death row inmates, psychologists will conduct weekly mental health evaluations to ensure their well-being. Monthly counseling sessions will also be arranged to support their mental health.

Similarly, drug-addicted prisoners and those facing severe psychological issues will be offered tailored rehabilitation programs.

These reforms underline Punjab’s commitment to fostering a humane prison environment.

By prioritizing mental health and rehabilitation, the province aims to reintegrate prisoners into society as healthier, more stable individuals, thereby reducing the likelihood of reoffending and enhancing overall public safety.
