LAHORE: In response to the harsh weather conditions, the interim government of Punjab has opted to reintroduce the complimentary travel option for students on Metro and Speedo Buses, as well as the Orange Line Metro Train.
Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has directed officials overseeing the extensive public transport initiatives to extend the free travel policy for an additional three months or until the commencement of the summer vacation.
Until the onset of the summer break, students up to Class XII will enjoy free rides on all Metro Buses and the Orange Line Train, as declared by caretaker Punjab Transport Minister Ibrahim Hassan Murad. This benefit will also be extended to madrassah students.
Minister Murad mentioned that although the free travel facility experienced a brief interruption during the recent winter holidays, millions of students have already benefited from it. Additionally, the Speedo bus service will also provide students with the complimentary travel option.
Furthermore, the Punjab government is actively facilitating the provision of interest-free motorcycles based on EVs technology for students, aligning with its education-friendly vision. This initiative aims to make it easier for more young individuals to pursue their education.
Reports indicate that around 30,000 students utilize these transportation facilities daily, contributing to a reduction in fuel import bills.
It is noteworthy that, in response to the soaring oil prices, the provincial government had initially announced free public transport for students last year. Although the service was discontinued just before the winter break, the interim government has now reinstated the free travel program, extending it through the summer holidays.
Students are reminded that they can avail themselves of the complimentary bus service only if they carry their school or institution identity cards and are dressed in their respective uniforms.
