ISLAMABAD: Asad Umar, the former secretary-general of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has been apprehended by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Asad Umar was taken into custody from Islamabad in connection with the cypher probe case.
The FIA’s counter-terrorism wing had initiated a case against Imran Khan, who was removed from office through a no-confidence motion. The investigation established his intentional involvement in the misuse of a classified document, leading to his arrest.
Earlier, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the vice chairman of PTI and former foreign minister, was also arrested from his residence in Islamabad in relation to the Cypher case. He was subsequently transferred to the headquarters of the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA).
These developments stem from revelations made by Azam Khan, the former principal secretary to the PTI chairman. After a period of absence, Khan came forward and revealed details about the former PM’s use of a US cypher. The aim was to achieve political gains and to thwart a potential no-confidence motion against him.
