Controversy has stirred within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) as Sher Afzal Marwat, a key PTI figure, criticized the selection of Sheikh Waqas Akram as Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), branding it a “fraud” against public trust.
Venting his frustration on X (formerly Twitter), Marwat contended that neither PTI Founder Imran Khan nor the party’s top decision-making bodies had consulted him or sought his opinion on Akram’s appointment.
He stressed that the decision to appoint Akram did not signal any deviation from the party leadership’s initial stance.
“I will meet him tomorrow and inform him about the fraud in his name. I was not informed about the committee meeting, nor was it on its agenda,” Marwat declared, highlighting his exclusion from the decision-making process.
Marwat, renowned for his outspokenness on governance and party issues, reiterated the significance of transparency and democratic values within the PTI, asserting that the party should not be subject to arbitrary decisions reminiscent of a “Rajwara” (monarchy). He pledged to take necessary measures to safeguard the party’s democratic processes from being undermined.
Previously, the PTI had announced Sheikh Waqas Akram as its nominee for the pivotal PAC chairmanship. PTI spokesperson Rauf Hassan indicated that the final decision would be made after further consultations with the party leadership.
In response to the development, Akram expressed gratitude on his X account to PTI founder chairman Imran Khan and the party leadership for nominating him in accordance with Khan’s directives. This situation underscores internal tensions within the PTI regarding decision-making processes and party democracy.
