LAHORE: In Lahore, an anti-terrorism court approved a five-day physical remand of Afnan Shafqat, 17, concerning a tragic road accident in Defence Phase-VII that claimed the lives of six individuals from the same family.
Additionally, the court requested an investigation report for the incident during the upcoming hearing.
In today’s proceedings, the police informed the judge about the inclusion of terrorism provisions in the initial report (FIR).
They sought physical remand to further investigate the accused, prompting the court to inquire if a judicial magistrate had previously granted such remand.
The victim’s lawyer pointed out that the investigating officer hadn’t sought remand from the judicial magistrate, advocating for granting Afnan’s physical remand as no evidence has been recovered from him yet.
Later, the teenager’s attorney emphasized the right to a fair trial for all individuals involved.
Acknowledging the accident as a result of the accused’s negligence, the lawyer underscored Afnan’s age of 17 and urged for appropriate clauses to be inserted into the FIR, suggesting the possibility of trial under juvenile court provisions.
Earlier,
Afnan Shafqat, a teenager involved in a fatal road collision in Phase VII of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), is seeking bail on Saturday.
During the bail petition hearing at the sessions court, the defense requested the accused’s release, emphasizing that the incident was an accident and highlighting the accused’s status as an underage individual.
The court has requested the case records from the police, where the defense lawyer argued that while the FIR includes clauses of the anti-terrorism law, the accused should be granted bail, considering their age and the nature of the incident as an unintended mishap.
