FAISALABAD: Police in Jaranwala have arrested a suspect named Yaseen who allegedly used a mosque’s loudspeaker to provoke people and incite violence during the recent unrest in the area. The violence erupted after rumors of the desecration of the Holy Quran spread, leading to mobs attacking Christian neighborhoods and churches. The arrest of Yaseen comes after a video of him speaking on the mosque’s loudspeaker went viral on the internet.
The violence resulted in the damage of a Christian cemetery and the office of the local assistant commissioner. To control the situation, the Punjab government deployed Rangers and around 3,000 police officers from various units. In response to the incident, the district administration implemented Section 144. It restricts gatherings, for a period of seven days, except for government-organized events.
