More rain is expected for the port city today (Thursday), according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), as the country continues to experience sporadic downpours that have already claimed over 75 lives.
Since the beginning of the monsoon rains in Pakistan, 80 people have died in rain-related accidents, with Balochistan reporting the greatest death toll at 42, including 16 women and 13 children.
The third day of rain in the capital brought more difficulties for commuters and pedestrians as rainwater accumulated in low-lying areas.
The meteorological authority issued a statement predicting that today will be gloomy with light to severe monsoon rainfall in the port city.
“The top parts of the land are being penetrated by strong wet currents. The upper and central parts are also being affected by a westerly wave, according to the meteorological authority.
Heavy rains could cause urban flooding in Balochistan’s Khuzdar, Kalat, Lasbella, Naseerabad, Gwadar, Panjgur, Turbat, and other regions under the control of the weather system, it added.
Balochistan, Sindh, Kashmir, Islamabad, northeastern Punjab, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan may expect further rain, wind, and thundershowers, it continued.
The Kakar Khurasan Dam in Balochistan reported a breach, and other dams reported overflowing and damage. While further rain is predicted across the province, numerous districts’ roads are flooded, making driving difficult.
The rainstorm persisted for a third day throughout Punjab as well, flooding low-lying regions in Rahim Yar Khan and causing fatal rain-related accidents in Multan.
