Pemra Cracks Down on TV Channels: Notices Issued for Violating Election Code

Election Code

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has taken a stern stance on alleged violations of the election code of conduct by four electronic media news channels. On Thursday, Pemra issued show-cause notices to Geo News, ARY News, GNN, and Dawn News, following complaints from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

The ECP raised concerns that the mentioned channels had breached the election code of conduct by airing exclusive interviews with political party leaders beyond the designated deadline for electioneering. Pemra has responded by giving the management of these news channels a seven-day window to provide a reply during a personal hearing. Further actions will be considered based on the channels’ responses.

Additionally, Pemra issued directives to satellite news channels, urging strict adherence to the code of conduct outlined in the Elections Act 2017. This move is aimed at preventing any potential disciplinary actions against media outlets during the election period.

Simultaneously, the ECP is contemplating issuing notices to other electronic channels for allegedly releasing partial election results before the prescribed deadline of 6 pm. Sources within the ECP informed that certain channels began disseminating results from various polling stations slightly ahead of the official deadline.

The unfolding situation highlights the regulatory challenges in maintaining a fair and disciplined electoral process. Pemra’s actions underscore the significance of upholding the election code of conduct, emphasizing transparency and adherence to established guidelines in media coverage during this crucial period.

As the regulatory bodies and media outlets engage in this discourse, the broader implications for the democratic process and media ethics come under scrutiny, underscoring the delicate balance between freedom of the press and responsible journalism in the context of electoral events.
