Famous Pashto actress Khushboo was tragically found murdered in a field in Akbarpura, Nowshera, with her brother alleging that the crime was committed in the name of ‘honour’.
According to police, a case has been registered against two suspects based on a complaint from the victim’s brother, who claimed that the accused had been threatening Khushboo to leave the entertainment industry.
When Khushboo refused to comply with their demands, she was allegedly shot, and her body was discarded in the fields. The police have taken the body into custody and conducted a post-mortem examination. Investigations are currently underway, with raids being conducted to apprehend the suspects.
Khushboo, a resident of Swabi, was a renowned actress in the Pashto drama industry. Her murder has shocked the community and brought to light the severe consequences women face in the name of ‘honour’.
This incident is reminiscent of the murder of social media star Qandeel Baloch in 2016, who was killed by her brother in the name of ‘honour’. Baloch gained fame for her provocative social media posts, which many in the country considered suggestive and immoral.
Her brother, Muhammad Waseem, was arrested and later sentenced to life in prison after openly admitting to the crime, claiming her behaviour was “intolerable”. However, in 2022, he was acquitted by the Lahore High Court after serving less than six years in prison.
Qandeel Baloch’s case became one of the most high-profile ‘honour killings’ in recent years, highlighting the brutal punishment women can face from male relatives for allegedly bringing ‘shame’ to the family’s reputation. The murder of Khushboo similarly underscores the ongoing issue of ‘honour’ crimes in Pakistan, where women are often subjected to lethal violence under the guise of protecting family honour.
