Pakistan Denies Track-II or Backdoor Diplomacy with India over Cricket

Pakistan has clarified that no Track-II or backdoor diplomacy is underway between itself and India regarding cricket. India’s refusal to participate in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan led the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and government to adopt a firm stance.

On Thursday, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch confirmed that no such diplomacy was happening during her weekly press briefing. Baloch also emphasized Pakistan’s longstanding friendly relations with the United States, based on mutual respect and non-interference, dismissing rumors spread for political agendas.

Ms. Baloch highlighted Pakistan’s concerns over Indian activities, referencing the arrest of Indian officer Kulbhushan Yadav in Balochistan a few years ago. She also voiced opposition to a potential UAE visa ban on Pakistani citizens, confirming ongoing dialogue with the UAE government.

The spokesperson added that Pakistan remains in close communication with China to ensure the safety of Chinese nationals and investments in Pakistan, asserting that any attempts to disrupt Pakistan-China ties would be countered. “We are fully committed to safeguarding Pakistan against all internal and external threats,” she declared.

Regarding Afghanistan, Ms. Baloch urged the Afghan administration to address terrorist groups operating within its borders, warning that Pakistan’s patience should not be underestimated. She reiterated Pakistan and Iran’s commitment to preventing terrorist groups from using their border regions.

Pakistan is also intent on strengthening ties with Bangladesh, she added.

Baloch mentioned that the PCB remains in contact with the ICC over India’s unwillingness to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy. She noted that Pakistan and other regional countries have repeatedly raised concerns with Afghanistan regarding cross-border terrorism, calling on Afghan authorities to take decisive action.

Finally, she dismissed any doubts about the strength of Pakistan-China relations, emphasizing that their strategic partnership remains steadfast.
