A district administration spokesman said the Commissioner had instructed Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Rawalpindi Director General (DG) Xenia Humayun to use all resources available to rehabilitate the historic park and finish the project as quickly as feasible during a visit to Liaquat Bagh.
He gave the DG PHA instructions to paint the boundary wall, connect the adjacent mosque to the park, and renovate the Liaquat Bagh platform using Chakwal stone.
The Commissioner also demanded the creation of a plan for Liaquat Bagh’s beautification and the prompt delivery of funds as soon as feasible in order to finish the project in a record amount of time.
The commissioner was informed by the DG PHA of the various PHA projects that were currently in progress and were assured that every effort would be made to finish the Liaquat Bagh project as quickly as feasible.
It would be appropriate to highlight that the city of Rawalpindi has decided to construct a monument in the Liaquat Bagh at the exact location where Benazir Bhutto was murdered 15 years ago.
Mengal presided over a meeting that made the decision last week at the Municipal Corporation of Rawalpindi.
The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has failed to erect a monument and a memorial library at the scene of the tragedy since her assassination, despite numerous declarations and project approval. Benazir Bhutto, a former prime minister, was killed on December 27, 2007, after speaking at a campaign gathering in Liaquat Bagh.
The PPP was elected to power in the federation and Sindh province in the 2008 elections, but her memorial could not be built where she was killed.
The Punjab coalition government has made the significant decision to erect a memorial now that the PPP is in power at the center and in Sindh where it has its administration.
