Rigging Allegations
In a recent development, the newly-appointed Rawalpindi Commissioner, Saif Anwar Jappa, vehemently dismissed rigging allegations made by his predecessor regarding irregularities in the February 8 general elections. Jappa clarified that his role as commissioner during the polls was strictly for coordination purposes, refuting any involvement in electoral misconduct.
The former Commissioner of Rawalpindi Division, Liaquat Ali Chatha, tendered his resignation, acknowledging his contribution to widespread rigging in the general elections held in the garrison city. Chatha’s admission pointed to a significant lapse in the electoral process, leading to injustice for the electorate.
Taking charge officially on February 7, Commissioner Jappa conducted a press conference at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium alongside District Returning Officers (DROs) from Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Attock, and Chakwal districts. Jappa, who assumed an additional charge following Chatha’s resignation, emphasized the fairness and accuracy of the recent elections.
The District Returning Officer (DRO) for Rawalpindi assured the public that the elections were conducted transparently and without external pressures. Dismissing the former commissioner’s allegations, the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chakwal categorically denied any undue influence during the electoral process.
Commissioner Jappa called for a comprehensive inquiry into the rigging claims raised by the former commissioner, expressing his denial of the accusations and underscoring the need for a thorough investigation.
Prior to addressing the media, Jappa chaired an emergency meeting with DROs from Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, and Murree at the DRO office. The objective of the meeting was to assess the current situation in the aftermath of Chatha’s allegations and to strategize a response to the unfolding electoral controversy.
