National Assembly Passes Resolution Condemning US Call for Probe into General Elections

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s National Assembly has passed a resolution condemning a recent resolution by the United States House of Representatives, which called for an investigation into alleged irregularities in Pakistan’s general elections held on February 8.

The Pakistani resolution, tabled by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmaker Shaista Pervaiz Malik, denounced the US resolution as “contrary to facts” and labeled it as unwarranted interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

The resolution, passed amid protests from opposition benches, expressed deep disappointment over the US House Resolution 901, which urged for a “full and independent investigation” into claims of electoral interference or irregularities. Pakistani lawmakers asserted that the US resolution misrepresented the facts surrounding the elections and emphasized Pakistan’s sovereignty as an independent nation that does not tolerate external interference.

MNA Shaista Pervaiz Malik, who tabled the resolution, criticized the US resolution as a blatant intrusion into Pakistan’s internal matters, despite its non-binding nature. She accused opposition lawmakers of undermining Pakistan’s sovereignty by condoning foreign meddling in domestic affairs.

The National Assembly resolution further demanded that the United States uphold bilateral relations with Pakistan based on mutual respect and non-interference. It underscored Pakistan’s commitment to managing its electoral processes independently and called for international partners to respect this stance.

The passage of this resolution reflects Pakistan’s firm stance against perceived external attempts to influence its internal governance and electoral processes. It signals the country’s resolve to safeguard its sovereignty and maintain diplomatic relations on terms of equality and respect with all nations, including the United States.
