ISLAMABAD: The death toll from the powerful earthquakes in Myanmar and Thailand has surpassed 1,000, with fears that the number could rise further.
The quake, measuring 7.7 in magnitude, struck near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Rescue teams are tirelessly searching for survivors trapped under debris.
In Mandalay alone, 694 deaths have been confirmed, though U.S. media reports suggest the toll could climb as high as 10,000. The tremors were felt as far as Bangkok—900 kilometers from the epicenter—causing the collapse of multiple buildings and bridges.
Rescue operations continue, with estimates placing total casualties between 1,000 and 10,000. The earthquake’s impact was also felt in parts of India, including Meghalaya and Manipur, as well as in Bangladesh and China.
In response, Thailand has declared a state of emergency in Bangkok. On Friday, an under-construction building in the city collapsed, killing at least 10 people, while around 100 construction workers remain missing.
