MQM-P Shortlists 200 Candidates for General Elections 2024, Raises Concerns on Delimitations

Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQM-P) has reportedly finalized a list of 200 candidates for the upcoming 2024 general elections, according to the reports.

The MQM-P parliamentary board conducted interviews with over 600 candidates in the initial phase, ultimately shortlisting 200 candidates in the second phase. The final list is set to be forwarded to the Rabita Committee.

In a previous development, MQM-P had urged the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to dismiss the Sindh Election Commissioner. Sources revealed that the MQM-P delegation, comprising party convenor Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Dr. Farooq Sattar, Aminul Haque, and others, engaged in discussions with CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) headquarters.

During the meeting, the party expressed reservations about the new delimitations, particularly in constituencies such as Malir, Keamari, Baldia, and Korangi in Karachi. Additionally, objections were raised against the amalgamation of rural and urban areas in several Sindh cities, including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpur Khas, and Nawabshah.

MQM-P leaders called for the CEC to take suo-motu action on these concerns and requested the removal of the Sindh election commissioner, expressing a lack of confidence in him leading up to the general elections. The sources further noted that MQM-P intended to challenge the new constituency list issued by the ECP by approaching the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

In response to the party’s grievances, the CEC assured the MQM-P delegation of prompt attention to their complaints.
