Melody in Mourning: Legendary Indian Singer Pankaj Udhas Passes Away at 73

On Monday, the music world mourned the loss of the legendary Indian singer, Pankaj Udhas, who passed away at the age of 73 after battling a prolonged illness. The sad news was confirmed by his daughter, Nayaab Udhas, through an Instagram post where she expressed the family’s deep sorrow.

“With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padmashri Pankaj Udhas on 26th February 2024 due to a prolonged illness,” Nayaab shared in the heartfelt post.

Renowned for his soul-stirring renditions of ghazals, a form of poetry consisting of rhyming couplets, Pankaj Udhas had amassed a global fan base. His representative informed that the maestro had been ailing for some time and succumbed to his illness around 11 am at Breach Candy Hospital.

Born on May 17, 1951, in Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas rose to prominence during the 1980s and 1990s, establishing himself as one of India’s most beloved ghazal singers. His repertoire includes timeless classics such as “Chitthi Aayi Hai,” “Aur Aahista Kijiye Baatein,” “Chandi Jaisa Rang Hai Tera,” “Mein Nashe Mein Hoon,” “Chupke Chupke,” and “Na Kajre Ki Dhar,” among others.

Pankaj Udhas received numerous awards and accolades throughout his illustrious career, including the prestigious Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the world of art and music. His legacy lives on through his timeless melodies, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of music enthusiasts worldwide.
