May 9 Violence Coined an ‘Attempted Coup’ by Interim PM Kakar

Attempted Coup

ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar has characterized the May 9 violence as “an attempted coup and civil war, with the target being the serving army chief and his military team.”

In his remarks, the interim prime minister condemned the riots that followed the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on corruption charges in May of this year.

He emphasized that such manipulation and violence were unacceptable in any form of government, and these events were witnessed by the entire world, as reported by international newspapers.

PM Kakar stressed that the government’s intention is not to create an impression of seeking revenge against those involved in the May 9 violence. However, he added that failing to take legal action against those who violated the country’s laws and engaged in violence would make the government appear complicit in the matter.

The interim premier also emphasized that no political party had the right to resort to stone-throwing, abuse, or arson against others.

Regarding his unexpected role as prime minister, PM Kakar mentioned that he had never anticipated sitting in the prime minister’s chair.

He also addressed Islamabad’s policy concerning the Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and other banned organizations, stating that the government possesses both negotiation and force-based tools to deal with these entities, underscoring the government’s resolute stance against terrorism.

Discussing India-Pakistan relations and the role of trade, the caretaker premier asserted that the final decision on bilateral trade rests with Indian politicians.
