VONC
Maulana Fazal ur Rehman has offered a clarification regarding the individuals involved in the vote of no confidence (VONC) against Imran Khan, asserting that Lt General Nadeem Anjum, not Lt General (retired) Faiz Hameed, played a role in the process.
This clarification comes in the wake of Maulana’s earlier statement, where he had attributed the VONC to the former army chief and spymaster, Faiz Hameed, who had been recently removed from his position as the head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and posted as Corps Commander Peshawar.
During an interview with Gharida Farooqui, Maulana acknowledged the need to rectify his previous remarks and clarified that it was Lt General Nadeem Anjum, the subsequent Director-General of ISI, who was involved in the vote against Imran Khan. The initial attribution to Faiz Hameed had raised questions about the accuracy of Maulana’s assertions, given Hameed’s recent reassignment.
In response to General Bajwa’s statement that he could swear on oath against Maulana’s version, Fazal emphasized that such oaths would hold no meaning. He expressed skepticism about the respect for oaths among military generals, highlighting the prevalent violation of the oath to stay away from politics.
When asked if he desired an investigation into the matter, Maulana questioned the credibility of any institution in Pakistan to undertake such an inquiry, expressing a lack of trust in the existing institutions. He reiterated that his version was based on what he considered to be “facts,” and he deemed it unnecessary to engage in discussions about oaths concerning events that were witnessed by the public.
Maulana’s clarification adds another layer to the ongoing discourse surrounding the VONC and the alleged involvement of military figures in Pakistan’s political landscape, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in the political processes of the country.
