Maryam Nawaz
LONDON: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has firmly denied recent media reports suggesting that she has been diagnosed with throat cancer.
Speaking at a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) event in London, where she was accompanied by her father, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, she clarified that her health issues were related to the parathyroid gland and not cancer.
The event, organized by PML-N UK President Ahsan Dar, provided a platform for Maryam to address the rumors that had been circulating about her health.
Maryam explained that she had been in Geneva for medical check-ups concerning her parathyroid gland, a condition she stated could only be treated in Switzerland or the United States.
She reassured her supporters that she did not have throat cancer as reported, emphasizing that she had been working tirelessly for the past eight months. “I have been suffering from parathyroid issues, and this can be cured only in Switzerland or America. I was in Geneva for my check-ups,” she explained.
Maryam also noted that despite the rumors, she had not intended to make her health a public issue but felt compelled to address the matter due to the growing speculation. She confirmed that she would be returning to Pakistan in two days.
In the same event, Nawaz Sharif took the opportunity to speak about the political and economic situation in Pakistan. He expressed optimism for the country’s future and praised the contributions of his brother, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and his daughter, Maryam, in the nation’s development.
He also lamented missed opportunities for Pakistan, particularly regarding its potential to join the G20. Nawaz linked these setbacks to political challenges and the decisions of the Supreme Court, especially his disqualification in the Panama Papers case in 2017.
He criticized retired judges, indirectly referring to figures like Saqib Nisar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, blaming them for hampering the country’s economic growth and progress.
Nawaz Sharif also pointed out that despite these political hurdles, the PML-N leadership had consistently worked toward the prosperity of Pakistan, with Shehbaz Sharif putting in immense efforts to steer the country toward stability and progress.
Maryam, in her remarks, highlighted the positive economic developments, including the record-setting performance of Pakistan’s stock market and growing foreign investment.
She emphasized that while the country faced challenges, Pakistan’s reserves were increasing, and the world was taking notice of its potential.
Maryam acknowledged the obstacles faced by the current government but expressed confidence in the leadership of Nawaz Sharif, who she stated had been instrumental in keeping Pakistan from defaulting. “Shehbaz Sharif is making all-out efforts to steer the country towards prosperity. He works day and night for the betterment of Pakistan,” she added.
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif also addressed the gathering, accusing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of radicalizing overseas supporters, which had led to confrontations.
Tensions had erupted earlier when PTI and PML-N workers clashed outside the Avenfield flats in London, with the police intervening to restore order after 20 minutes of unrest.
The event underscored the political dynamics within Pakistan and the continued prominence of the PML-N in shaping the country’s future.
