Magnitude 4.4 Earthquake Shakes Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

On Wednesday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 shook the national capital Islamabad, as well as Malakand, Swabi, and Swat in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region, as reported by the National Seismic Monitoring Centre.

The tremors extended to Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan at approximately 2:45 pm. The earthquake’s depth was measured at 137 kilometers, with the epicenter located on the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.

Winter Showers Forecast For Karachi And South Balochistan, Cold And Dry Spell Across Rest Of Pakistan

In the midst of the current winter wave, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted rainfall in Karachi and southern Balochistan. However, the remainder of the country is expected to experience cold and dry conditions over the next 24 hours.

Director Irfan Virk of the PMD mentioned the likelihood of light rain or drizzle in coastal areas of southern Balochistan and Karachi, including Makran, today (Wednesday).

Islamabad

The Meteorological Office further stated that the cold and dry weather will persist in the northern regions of the country and north Balochistan, where temperatures may drop below freezing.

The recorded lowest temperatures include Leh at -11°C, Skardu at -9°C, Gilgit and Gupis at -6°C, and Astore, Kalam, Kalat, and Srinagar at -5°C.

Moreover, a dense layer of fog is expected to linger in the plains of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, upper Sindh, and Islamabad throughout the week.

Authorities have issued warnings for people to exercise caution in the foggy weather. In response to the fog in various areas of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, certain routes have been closed to prevent accidents.

Motorways M1 and M2 have been temporarily shut down, affecting the schedule of flights at Islamabad Airport. Many flights are experiencing delays or cancellations due to the smog hindering thoroughfare.
