A catastrophic landslide in Upper Dir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has claimed the lives of at least 12 family members, including nine children. The incident occurred in the Maidan area early Friday morning, burying the family’s home under tons of debris.
Local authorities have confirmed that all 12 victims, comprising two women, one man, and nine children, have been recovered from the wreckage and transported to the hospital for medico-legal processing.
This devastating event comes amid severe monsoon conditions across Pakistan. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued warnings of ongoing widespread rain and windstorms throughout the country for the next 24 hours. The Met Office forecasts heavy rainfall in various regions, including Sindh, parts of Balochistan, Punjab, the Potohar region, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.
Additionally, the forecast predicts that the heavy rains could potentially trigger landslides in vulnerable areas such as Murree, Galliyat, Mansehra, Kohistan, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Buner, and Kashmir. The severe weather conditions are expected to exacerbate the risk of further landslides and flooding, raising concerns for additional safety and recovery efforts across the affected regions.
