Landslide
SKARDU: At least five people have tragically lost their lives after a vehicle carrying multiple passengers was caught in a landslide in Skardu, according to police reports on Sunday.
The incident occurred when a landslide struck the area, burying the vehicle under a heap of debris. Rescue teams quickly arrived on the scene and were able to recover four bodies, as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Arif Ahmed.
Despite their efforts, the search is still ongoing for the remaining victims, with excavators and additional rescue personnel dispatched to assist in clearing the rubble and recovering the bodies. The victims were identified as residents of Shengus village, located in the Skardu region.
In another tragic event, three people lost their lives in a separate accident in Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s (AJK) Neelum Valley. A jeep traveling from Sharda to Kel plunged into a ditch, resulting in fatalities.
Seven other people, all from the same family, were injured in the accident, two of whom are in critical condition and have been transferred to the hospital for treatment, as reported by Dr. Muhammad Ashraf Khan. Witnesses suggested that the snow-covered roads were a contributing factor to the accident.
A third incident occurred in Astore, where a vehicle fell into a ravine, leaving one person dead and five others injured.
According to the police, eight people were traveling in the vehicle, and while four of them sustained minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital, the others are receiving medical treatment for their injuries.
These incidents come amid adverse weather conditions, including intermittent snowfall in northern areas such as Babusar Top and Nanga Parbat, which are known for their treacherous terrain.
Landslides and accidents are unfortunately common in these areas, where road conditions are often difficult and unpredictable.
Just last month, a similarly devastating accident occurred in Gilgit-Baltistan, when a bus carrying wedding guests plunged off a bridge into the Indus River, resulting in 14 fatalities.
Police attributed that tragic event to the driver’s negligence, stating that the bus, which was part of a wedding procession, was overspeeding and hit the safety railing before falling into the river.
