LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) rendered its decision on Thursday, dismissing a petition that challenged the appointment of Ishaq Dar as deputy prime minister, citing it as “inadmissible.”
The petitioner contended that Ishaq Dar’s appointment violated the constitution, emphasizing the absence of a provision for the role of deputy prime minister within the constitutional framework.
Asserting the need for legal clarity, the petitioner urged the court to nullify Dar’s appointment and address the purported constitutional infraction.
Last month, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed Ishaq Dar to the position of deputy prime minister, a move formalized through a notification issued by the Cabinet Division.
The notification, confirming Dar’s new role, stated: “The Prime Minister has been pleased to designate Mr. Muhammad Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, as Deputy Prime Minister of Pakistan with immediate effect and until further orders.”
Despite the dismissal of the petition, debates surrounding the constitutionality of Dar’s appointment continue to reverberate within legal and political circles.
This development underscores broader discussions about the delineation of powers and positions within the governmental structure, particularly concerning roles not explicitly defined in the Constitution.
The court’s decision reflects the complexities inherent in interpreting constitutional provisions and the need for precise legal delineations in matters of governance.
As the legal landscape evolves, further clarity may be sought on the constitutionality of appointments such as the one involving Ishaq Dar, shaping the future trajectory of governmental structures and processes in Pakistan.
