BRT Fare Increase
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has decided to implement a fare increase for the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, raising fares by Rs5 to Rs10.
This measure aims to address the significant financial challenges faced by the BRT, which is currently operating at an annual deficit exceeding Rs3 billion.
In an effort to mitigate these financial difficulties, the provincial budget has allocated Rs3 billion in subsidies to support the BRT.
A recent meeting, chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Advisor Muzammil Aslam, extensively discussed strategies to reduce the operational deficit and enhance revenue for the BRT.
During the meeting, various options were considered, including fare adjustments. According to official documents, the final decision regarding the fare increase will be made by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority (KPUMA) board.
In addition to discussing fare hikes, the meeting also addressed the introduction of a new daily unlimited travel pass. This pass, priced at Rs150, aims to provide affordable and convenient travel options for the general public.
Special concessions are also being considered, with the pass available at a reduced rate of Rs100 for women, students, transgender individuals, and senior citizens. This initiative is designed to encourage the use of public transport among these groups, making it more accessible and cost-effective.
The documents further indicate that one rupee from each passenger’s fare will be allocated to cover the operational expenses of KPUMA. This allocation is intended to support the ongoing management and maintenance of the BRT system, ensuring its sustainability and efficiency.
In a subsequent interview, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Advisor Muzammil Aslam confirmed the impending fare increase.
He emphasized that the KPUMA board will make the final decision, taking into account the financial needs of the BRT system and the potential impact on commuters.
The fare increase is seen as a necessary step to ensure the continued operation of the BRT, providing reliable and efficient public transportation for the residents of Peshawar.
This decision comes as part of broader efforts by the KP government to enhance public transport infrastructure and services, addressing both current financial challenges and future growth needs.
The proposed fare increases and the introduction of the daily travel pass reflect a balanced approach aimed at maintaining the financial viability of the BRT system while still offering affordable transportation options for the public.
