KE Intensifies Crackdown on Electricity Theft in Karachi

Electricity Theft

K-Electric (KE) continues its robust campaign against electricity theft and defaulters in Karachi, with significant support from law enforcement agencies.

The utility’s ongoing drive focuses on tackling illegal electricity connections and recovering outstanding payments, particularly in the Korangi area.

During a recent operation in Korangi, KE targeted several neighborhoods, including Pak Town, Chakra Goth, Labour Square, Sector 34/2, and Ibrahim Hyderi.

This comprehensive effort led to the dismantling of underground cables that were illegally distributing an estimated 84,000 units of stolen electricity.

The operation impacted a wide range of users, including 595 residential houses, 70 commercial shops, 155 stalls, 18 water pumps, and two parks.

The illegal connections, commonly referred to as “kundas,” bypass the standard safety measures of the utility’s infrastructure.

This not only leads to financial losses but also poses significant safety risks, especially during the monsoon season when such setups can become hazardous.

The improper use of kundas can cause dangerous short circuits and fires, posing threats to both public safety and the power grid’s integrity.

KE’s drive against electricity theft is part of a broader strategy to reduce line losses and safeguard the power infrastructure.

Over the past fiscal year, KE registered 980 First Information Reports (FIRs) against individuals involved in theft, demonstrating its commitment to addressing this issue through legal channels.

Additionally, the utility has conducted 1,500 operations throughout Korangi, Landhi, and neighboring areas since the start of the year.

These drives have resulted in the removal of 20,000 kilograms of kunda wires, reflecting KE’s aggressive stance against illegal electricity usage.

Addressing electricity theft and the issue of non-payment are critical for managing and improving the loss profile of an area.

KE reports that while 70% of its network is free from load-shedding, it remains focused on reducing line losses in the remaining areas to provide reliable and safe electricity.

KE calls on customers, local representatives, and elected officials to collaborate with the company in overcoming these challenges.

By working together, they aim to create a more efficient and secure power distribution network for Karachi.
