A total shutdown is being held on Wednesday in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir in commemoration of the Kashmir Martyrs
To remember the 22 Kashmiris who were killed by the soldiers of the Dogra monarch on this day in 1931, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference has called for a strike, which would be backed by all pro-freedom groups.
On this day, many people visit the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib in Srinagar to recite Fateha for the deceased.
On July 13, 1931, hundreds of Kashmiris gathered outside Central Jail in Srinagar to see the court hearings of Abdul Qadeer, who had called on the people to oppose the Dogra authority. Twenty-two of these Kashmiris would later die in the protests that followed.
A young man began Azaan in Namaz-e-Zuhr, and the Dogra troops shot and killed him. Another man stepped forward in his place, and like him, he met a violent end at the hands of the military. Twenty-two young men died in this manner before the Azaan was finished.
