In an era dominated by widespread social media usage, a recent survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan has unveiled a significant shift in viewing habits among Karachi youth.
The findings reveal that a substantial seven out of 10 individuals in the city state that they do not watch television, underlining the declining relevance of traditional broadcast platforms.
An insightful breakdown of the survey data by age group highlights that even the youth demographic, specifically those between 18 to 24 years old, displays a lack of interest in television. A staggering 71% of this age group indicated that they do not engage with television content.
Interestingly, the survey delves into age-specific preferences, indicating that individuals in the 31-50 age range are more likely to be television viewers, with 32% acknowledging their engagement with the medium.
The comprehensive survey involved 807 adult participants across both urban and rural areas of all six districts within the Karachi division. Respondents were asked about their television-watching habits on the preceding day.
A striking revelation from the survey is that seven out of 10 respondents reported not watching TV the day before, emphasizing a prevailing disinterest in traditional television content.
Furthermore, a gender-wise breakdown of the survey results shows minimal variation, with 70% of both men and women respondents expressing a lack of interest in television.
The educational background of participants also played a role in viewing habits, with 72% of Karachi residents educated up to intermediate level and below stating that they do not watch TV, compared to 67% of those with higher education.
These findings underscore a broader shift in consumer behavior, with social media and digital platforms increasingly becoming the primary sources of entertainment and information for the majority of Karachi’s residents.
