KARACHI: In 2023, Karachi experienced an alarming increase of approximately 11.11 percent in street crimes, with over 90,000 reported incidents, as revealed by police data. This marks a notable surge compared to the 2022 figures, where more than 80,000 cases were reported.
The data disclosed by Karachi police highlights a grim picture, with 134 citizens brutally murdered, hundreds injured during robbery resistance, and 411 civilians killed in various incidents among the reported street crimes.
Furthermore, more than 59,305 motorcycles and 2,336 cars were stolen and snatched, while over 28,000 citizens fell victim to mobile phone theft.
The report delves into the specifics, revealing that two banks were robbed in 2023. Additionally, the city witnessed an increase in cases of kidnapping and extortion, with 17 incidents of kidnapping for ransom and 50 reported cases of extortion.
It’s noteworthy that the street crime data from the police underscores a concerning deterioration in the law and order situation in Karachi, with over 81,000 incidents reported in 2022.
The previous year’s records showed 52,000 motorcycle thefts and snatching, 26,400 cases of mobile phone theft, and over 2,000 vehicles stolen or snatched.
The report further underscores the challenges faced by the police department in addressing and preventing these crimes, with only 4,000 stolen assets recovered, including 2,900 motorcycles, 600 cars, and 530 mobile phones.
The figures highlight the need for enhanced measures and strategies to improve public safety and combat the rising trend of street crimes in Karachi.
