Karachi Tragedy: Woman Killed, Daughter Injured in Police Crossfire

Police Crossfire

In a tragic incident on the National Highway near Gulshan-i-Hadeed in Karachi, a 60-year-old woman named Sara Ibrahim was mistakenly shot dead, and her 19-year-old daughter, Ghanwa Ibrahim, was critically wounded.

The incident unfolded when police received information about suspected criminals traveling in a white Corolla car.

Responding swiftly, the police initiated a chase, leading to an exchange of gunfire between officers and the suspects.

Regrettably, amidst the chaos, the Ibrahim family, traveling in their private car, fell victim to gunfire. Sara Ibrahim succumbed to her injuries on the spot, while her daughter Ghanwa sustained severe wounds.

Initial police reports claimed the family was caught in the crossfire initiated by the suspects.

However, relatives of the victims contested this narrative, alleging that the police mistakenly identified their car as belonging to dacoits and opened fire without attempting to signal them to stop.

Mohammed Usman, the maternal nephew of Sara Ibrahim, expressed dismay over the incident, stating, “The police did not attempt to stop the car or indicate them to stop, but they opened straight fire on the car.”

Taking serious note of the incident, Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar has intervened, demanding an immediate and detailed report from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir.

He assured the public that the government would not spare those responsible for the tragic incident, emphasizing that the police have been instructed to utilize all available resources, including advanced technology, to identify and hold the perpetrators accountable.

The investigation was further complicated by CCTV footage obtained by the police, which showed the victims’ car halted at the Sassui toll plaza, adding layers to the unfolding narrative and raising questions about the sequence of events leading to the fatal shooting.

As the community mourns the loss of Sara Ibrahim and prays for the recovery of Ghanwa Ibrahim, calls for transparency and accountability in law enforcement actions have grown stronger, highlighting the need for stringent protocols to prevent such tragic errors in the future.
