MANSEHRA: The Kaghan Highway has been partially reopened up to Naran after being closed for five months due to heavy snowfall, glaciers, and landslides. The reopening comes as snow has finally been cleared from the Gorian Glacier, allowing limited access for jeeps. Smaller vehicles, however, are still not permitted due to safety concerns.
According to the local administration, the Kaghan-Naran road had remained blocked throughout the winter, with massive snow accumulation making the route impassable. After extensive snow-clearing operations, the road has now been made accessible to some extent, though only for high-clearance vehicles.
Officials from the National Highway Authority (NHA) confirmed that full restoration of the road is expected within the next two days, weather permitting. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has issued a rain forecast for the coming 48 hours, which could delay further progress and pose risks to travel.
Local residents, many of whom rely heavily on tourism for their livelihoods, have welcomed the partial reopening with optimism, hoping it signals the return of economic activity in the scenic region.
Despite the progress, authorities have urged tourists to delay their travel plans until the highway is fully reopened and declared safe for all types of vehicles. “Public safety remains our top priority,” an official stated, advising travelers to stay updated on road and weather conditions before planning their visit.
