Justice Mussarat Hilali is set to become a Supreme Court judge

ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary body has approved the decision of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) to elevate Justice Mussarat Hilali, the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC), to the Supreme Court.

The Committee approved the JCP’s decision to appoint Chief Justice Mussarat Hilali of the PHC to the Supreme Court. This appointment makes her the second woman to be elevated to the top court, following Justice Ayesha Malik.

PPP Senator Farooq Hamid presided over the meeting, which focused on appointing judges to the SC and Federal Shariat Court. Various matters related to these appointments were discussed and reviewed during the gathering.

During the meeting, the parliamentary committee unanimously endorsed the decision of the JCP to appoint Justice Mussarat Hilali of the Peshawar High Court as a judge in the Supreme Court. The committee also approved the appointment of Justice Syed Muhammad Anwar as an aalim judge of the Federal Shariat Court.

According to sources, the appointment of Justice Hilali will increase the number of Supreme Court judges to 16, leaving one position vacant.

Justice Mussarat Hilali’s nomination as a Supreme Court judge was recommended by Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Justice Isa is set to become the next Chief Justice of the country.

Eventually, last month, the JCP approved the elevation of Justice Hilali to the top court.

On April 1, Justice Hilali became the first female Chief Justice of the PHC, succeeding Justice Qaiser Rashid Khan. Her appointment as Chief Justice of the PHC marked a historic milestone, being the first woman to hold the position.
