ISLAMABAD: Authorities have resolved to take stringent measures against individuals who defame the judiciary through social media platforms. The chief of a joint investigation team (JIT) overseeing the matter received a proposed action plan from officers of sensitive institutions during the team’s inaugural meeting.
The JIT has instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to gather information on individuals disseminating derogatory content against the judiciary, as well as those involved in uploading, sharing, and commenting on such content.
The upcoming phase anticipates the apprehension of those responsible for spreading anti-judiciary content.
In response to an escalating social media campaign targeting Supreme Court judges on January 16, the Ministry of Interior promptly established a JIT to counteract and address the malicious campaign.
This six-member JIT, led by the additional director of the FIA Cyber Crime Wing, brings together expertise from various intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
Notably, representatives from the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) form part of the team.
The investigative committee includes Grade 20 members from both IB and ISI, with the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Islamabad Police contributing to the efforts.
A PTA representative plays a crucial role, ensuring a comprehensive approach to identify and curb those responsible for the ongoing online smear campaign against judges.
The JIT’s primary objectives involve pinpointing individuals behind the malicious campaign and proposing effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Operating from the FIA headquarters, the committee serves as the secretariat and is expected to submit a detailed report to the Ministry of Interior within a strict timeframe of 15 days.
