Jamaat-e-Islami Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman issued a stern warning to the government on Sunday, stating that if the agreed-upon terms are not fulfilled within the next 45 days, his party will escalate its protests to include a nationwide wheel jam strike.
Speaking at a public rally in Lahore, Hafiz Naeem declared, “Should the government fail to uphold its promises, we will not hesitate to intensify our protest across the country. The people are united in our cause, and we call on them to support our fight for justice.”
He emphasized the urgent need for action, criticizing the government’s delay in addressing pressing issues such as high electricity bills and inflation. Hafiz Naeem warned that Jamaat-e-Islami’s patience is wearing thin, and a nationwide wheel jam strike could be imminent if the government does not meet its commitments.
In addition to domestic concerns, the Jamaat-e-Islami chief spoke on international matters, urging for improved relations with neighboring countries and condemning the current administration’s foreign policy. He also expressed grave concern over the plight of missing persons in Balochistan and called for their immediate recovery.
“The current rulers are bringing disgrace to Pakistan by seeking foreign assistance while neglecting urgent domestic issues,” Hafiz Naeem said.
Earlier, on August 9, a 14-day sit-in by Jamaat-e-Islami on Murree Road ended following an agreement with the government. The agreement includes commitments to reduce taxes on the salaried class and lower electricity rates within six weeks, as well as implementing a more effective income tax system targeting landlords and landholders.
Rehman criticized the government’s handling of the protest, particularly the Punjab Police’s attempts to disrupt it by raiding the homes of JI workers. He also expressed concern over the treatment of people in Balochistan and stressed the need for constructive dialogue with Afghanistan.
Rehman urged Pakistan to focus on strengthening ties with its neighbors and countering the influence of countries like India and the United States. The sit-in, which began on July 26, saw a significant turnout at I-8 on Islamabad Expressway, and Hafiz Naeemur Rehman criticized the Punjab Police’s actions and questioned the government’s approach to handling the protest.
