Jamat-e-Islami’s Ameer, Siraj-ul-Haq, has taken the significant step of tendering his resignation in response to the party’s perceived underperformance in the recent general elections. Despite the party’s energetic and determined efforts during the electoral campaign, the anticipated results did not materialize, leading Haq to submit his resignation.
The 2024 elections saw the JI facing a setback, as they were unable to secure a single seat in the National Assembly. Notably, independent candidates supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) emerged as the predominant group, further highlighting the challenges faced by traditional political entities.
Although Haq formally submitted his resignation on Monday, its immediate acceptance remains pending. The party’s internal dynamics are expected to come into play, with sources revealing that a crucial meeting of the JI’s majlis-e-shoora has been scheduled to take place in Lahore on February 17. During this gathering, the leadership will deliberate on whether to endorse or reject Haq’s resignation, shaping the immediate future of the party.
Siraj-ul-Haq, who assumed the role of Ameer in 2014 and was subsequently re-elected in 2019 for a five-year term, had his tenure scheduled to conclude in March 2024. The resignation marks a significant development within the party, prompting introspection and strategic considerations among its leadership as they navigate the post-election landscape and assess the way forward.
