ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Sirajul Haq has accused the government of taking action against party workers following a call from Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland.
In a video posted on X, Haq stated that JI had announced the Gaza March at the American embassy and had been making preparations when the government suddenly arrested JI Islamabad leadership, subjected workers to torture, and refused to permit the march. He strongly criticized the “actions against the JI after Secretary Nuland’s call with the government.”
Haq, in his video message, mentioned that he was en route to Islamabad and encouraged the public to join the rally in the capital.
Simultaneously, JI members obstructed the Kashmir Highway in Islamabad in response to the police’s arrest of several party workers who were preparing for the Gaza March at the American embassy on Sunday.
The protest, led by Central Naib Ameer Mian Muhammad Aslam, involved the burning of tires on the Kashmir Highway, and they demanded the release of the detained workers.
On Saturday, JI leaders were among those apprehended as they were getting ready for the ‘Gaza March,’ scheduled for Sunday in front of the US embassy.
According to the police, preparations for the protest were halted after the capital administration denied permission for the JI to organize the rally.
The operation began when the workers initiated protests while preparing for the protest at the Srinagar Highway, as stated by the police.
Subsequent to the arrest of the JI workers, others congregated at Serena Chowk and initiated a protest. The JI workers chanted slogans against Islamabad Police and the administration.
Pakistan Supports OIC’s Proposal For Gaza Protection Force At UNGA
Meanwhile, during the 10th Emergency Special UNGA Session in New York, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Munir Akram, called for serious consideration of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s (OIC) proposal to deploy a protection force to safeguard Palestinian civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.
This plea comes in the wake of escalating operations by Israeli occupation forces in Gaza, resulting in the tragic deaths of over 7,700 Palestinians, including 3,500 children.
In a final communiqué, the OIC’s Executive Committee, following an extraordinary open-ended meeting of foreign ministers on October 18, stressed the pressing need for international protection of the Palestinian people.
