ISLAMABAD: According to reports, objections have been raised by the registrar of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) regarding a petition filed by Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, seeking to suspend her sentence in the Iddat case and secure her release on bail.
Ms. Bushra Bibi argued in her application that her sentence was unsustainable due to “weak evidence” and inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case. She asserted that she had been convicted in a “politically motivated case” and highlighted the “pathetic” conditions of Adiala Jail where she is being held. Seeking justice, she urged the court to decide on the petition promptly.
However, the IHC registrar’s office objected to the petition, stating that it did not challenge any lower court order and that a similar matter was already pending before the trial court. The office emphasized that seeking identical relief from two different courts was not permissible.
Both Ms. Bibi and her husband have contested their conviction in the sessions court, with a decision pending. The District and Sessions Judge, Shahrukh Arjumand, initially set May 29 for announcing the reserved verdict but delayed it after requesting the case be transferred to another judge due to a lack of trust expressed by Ms. Bibi’s ex-husband, Khawar Maneka.
The case has now been transferred to Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Afzal Majoka, with the hearing scheduled to resume on June 11.
This legal saga has garnered significant attention, reflecting the complexities and controversies within Pakistan’s political and judicial landscape. As Ms. Bibi continues to navigate the legal process, the outcome remains uncertain, with implications reaching beyond her individual case.
