Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has reportedly assured Barrister Gohar, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), that a meeting with Imran Khan could be arranged at Adiala Jail on Monday. However, a spokesperson from the Interior Ministry clarified that the minister merely indicated that Khan’s request for a meeting would be “considered.”
Sources suggest that the meeting could potentially occur later on Monday. The conversation between Naqvi and Gohar took place via phone, during which Gohar not only sought to arrange a meeting with Khan but also requested that Khan’s personal physician be granted access to him in jail.
While the Interior Ministry confirmed the discussion, the spokesperson emphasized that permitting such meetings exclusively for Khan could be viewed as preferential treatment. This stance highlights the government’s intention to maintain uniformity in how inmates are treated.
Imran Khan is currently incarcerated in Adiala Jail alongside his wife, Bushra Bibi. However, the jail authorities have imposed a blanket ban on meetings with inmates until October 18. This restriction was instituted due to security concerns surrounding the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit in Islamabad.
Given these circumstances, it remains unclear whether the meeting will actually take place. The government’s focus on security and the equal treatment of inmates complicates the potential for Khan’s request to be fulfilled. As the situation develops, both the PTI and Khan’s supporters will be closely monitoring any updates regarding his access to medical care and the possibility of a meeting.
