At 32 years old, Baryl Vanneihsangi made history by becoming the youngest woman elected as an MLA to the Mizoram Assembly. Representing the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) from the Aizawl South-III constituency, she secured her victory with a margin of 1,414 votes.
Vanneihsangi holds a master’s degree in arts from the North Eastern Hill University in Shillong. Prior to her political career, she was known for her roles as a radio jockey and a television presenter. With a considerable following of over 252k on Instagram, she maintains a strong presence on social media.

A vocal advocate for gender equality, the newly elected ZPM MLA, Vanneihsangi, has been outspoken in her support for this cause. Her message emphasizes empowerment for women, disregarding any limitations imposed by gender or societal norms.
Vanneihsangi conveyed a powerful message, stating, “I want to encourage all women out there that our gender should never be a barrier to pursuing our passions. Whether it’s our interests or ambitions, irrespective of community or social background, I urge them to pursue their aspirations wholeheartedly.”
Mizoram Assembly election results
This time only three women candidates won in the Mizoram Assembly elections, the results of which were declared by the Election Commission of India on Monday.
Out of the 174 candidates in the fray, only 16 were women. Of them, two contested in two constituencies each, making it 18 seats having women candidates fighting the Assembly elections.
The Mizoram Assembly has 40 members.
