Indian YouTuber arrested after Posting peacock curry video

An aspiring Indian social media influencer has been arrested after a video of him cooking and eating a peacock, a protected national bird, sparked outrage. Kodam Pranay Kumar was detained on Monday and is currently in jail on a 14-day remand under the Wildlife Protection Act. The arrest followed investigations that confirmed the bird featured in his video was indeed a peacock.

Police Superintendent Akhil Mahajan from Telangana stated that the peacock’s presence was verified through other videos found on Kumar’s phone. Authorities are now investigating how Kumar obtained the protected bird and are considering whether he will be granted bail or remain in custody. The video, which showed Kumar preparing peacock curry, was intended to boost his social media following but instead triggered widespread condemnation.

Critics accused Kumar of promoting illegal wildlife consumption and disrespecting a national symbol. The Indian peacock, known for its vibrant blue feathers and majestic display, holds significant cultural importance in India. Historically, the Mughal Empire’s throne, the Peacock Throne, was adorned with bejewelled peacocks and symbolized the bird’s prominence.

In recent decades, rapid urbanization and habitat loss have led to a sharp decline in the peacock population. Consequently, stringent wildlife protection laws have been enacted to prevent hunting and harm to these birds. The public’s reaction to Kumar’s video reflects a broader commitment to upholding these laws and preserving India’s natural heritage.
