Cipher case
The Islamabad High Court adjourned the hearing on the petition challenging PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s trial in the Cipher case at Attock Jail. At the defense counsel’s request for an early hearing, the judge scheduled it for the following week.
In the course of the hearing, the court confronted objections raised regarding the application. Imran Khan’s attorney pointed out two objections, one of which pertained to consolidating multiple pleas within a single application.
Responding to this concern, the chief justice concurred to deal with the objections and directed the lawyer to elaborate on the merits of the case.
Furthermore, this marked a pivotal moment in the proceedings as the court sought to resolve procedural matters and delve into the substantive arguments regarding Imran Khan’s trial and the Law Ministry’s notification concerning the case at Attock Jail.
Lawyer Sher Afzal Marwat emphasized that there was no government order for transferring the court to the jail. Marwat clarified that the Law Ministry had issued just one NOC for the court’s relocation. He further highlighted that Special Court Judge Abul Hasnat had issued a secretive order for judicial remand without providing a specific date, raising questions about the legality and transparency of the process.
The client had received an order to appear on August 30, and following the bail order, his continued detention at Attock Jail was no longer permissible.
Marwat contended that conducting the trial at the jail essentially took the client out of the court’s jurisdiction, raising significant legal concerns.
The court postponed proceedings on the petition against Imran Khan’s Attock Jail trial and the Law Ministry’s notification to next week.
