ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) took a significant step on Wednesday by establishing two larger benches to address contempt of court cases related to “malicious campaigns” against Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Akhtar Mohsin Kayani.
Chief Justice Aamer Farooq will preside over one bench, joined by Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir. The other bench will be chaired by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, accompanied by Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri and Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan.
These benches are scheduled to convene on Thursday (May 9) to address the contempt of court cases. The decision to constitute these benches comes in response to concerns raised by Justice Babar Sattar regarding a social media campaign against him.
Justice Babar Sattar and Justice Akhtar Mohsin Kayani are among the six IHC judges who have expressed concerns about interference in judicial matters by the country’s intelligence agencies.
Previously, the IHC strongly condemned the malicious campaign targeting Justice Babar Sattar on social media. Confidential information and documents, including travel documents and allegations of hidden assets, were leaked online, prompting the court to issue a statement denouncing these actions.
The IHC clarified that Justice Sattar has only held Pakistani nationality and returned to Pakistan in 2005 after working as a lawyer in New York. The leaked information regarding his assets and properties was deemed unlawful and accompanied by unfounded allegations.
Furthermore, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan thoroughly scrutinized Justice Sattar’s assets both in Pakistan and the US before his appointment as a judge, providing assurance of his integrity and suitability for the position.
