ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court Election Tribunal, presided over by Justice Tariq Mahmood Jahangiri, has postponed hearings in the election rigging cases concerning National Assembly constituencies NA-46, NA-47, and NA-48 until July 24. This delay follows a stay order issued by the Islamabad High Court, which has halted the tribunal’s proceedings.
Justice Jahangiri expressed his readiness to continue the trial on a daily basis but noted that the stay order must first be lifted. The tribunal had previously ordered a daily trial and summoned the three MNAs implicated in the cases. However, the stay order has put a temporary hold on these proceedings.
During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer, Shoaib Shaheen, highlighted that the parties involved had not yet complied with court orders, particularly regarding the submission of election records by the Returning Officer. Justice Jahangiri acknowledged these issues and mentioned that the Chief Justice would review the matter on July 22. The tribunal will resume its work as soon as the stay order is lifted.
The delay has created uncertainty about the future of the cases, which are pivotal in determining the integrity of the elections in these constituencies. The Islamabad High Court had initially issued the stay order on July 11, preventing the tribunal from moving forward with the regular trial proceedings.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, led by petitioners Amir Mughal, Shoaib Shaheen, and Ali Bukhari, is challenging the election results in these constituencies. The tribunal’s next session on July 24 will be crucial in deciding the future course of these cases and addressing the legal and procedural hurdles that have emerged.
