ISLAMABAD: Bushra Bibi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, on Tuesday petitioned a district and sessions court in the federal capital to expedite the hearing of her appeals against her conviction in the iddat case.
In her petition, the former first lady requested that the appeals, which are scheduled for hearing in the local court, be brought forward to this week. Bushra Bibi emphasized the urgency of her situation and the need for a prompt resolution.
Responding to her request, the court scheduled the hearing for June 7, inviting arguments from both sides on the case. This move is seen as a crucial step in ensuring a timely judicial process.
Bushra’s petition comes a day after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) approved District and Sessions Judge Shahrukh Arjumand’s request to transfer the iddat case to another court. The IHC’s decision followed a letter from Judge Arjumand to the registrar, citing concerns raised by Bushra’s former husband and petitioner Khawar Maneka, which made it inappropriate for him to announce the verdict. These reservations have cast a shadow over the impartiality of the proceedings.
Subsequently, the IHC transferred the case to the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majuka. This transfer aims to ensure a fair trial and address any perceived biases.
Bushra Bibi’s lawyers, Salman Safdar and Khalid Yusuf appeared in Judge Majuka’s court, seeking the suspension of the sentence that has been pending since March 11. Safdar noted that the verdict was delivered on March 29, but Maneka’s expressed lack of confidence in the judge has delayed the hearing.
He further argued that Bushra Bibi was not given the opportunity to defend herself adequately. “The innocent have been held prisoners. Her health is deteriorating,” the lawyer stated, requesting the court to suspend the sentence this week, emphasizing the critical nature of her health condition.
