Heavy rainfall of over 250mm disrupts life in Lahore, people are advised to stay inside

LAHORE: The metropolis experienced a prolonged spell of heavy rainfall on Wednesday, which was described as “record-breaking.” This heavy rain disrupted daily life, causing the inundation of streets and low-lying areas in the city.

According to Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Lahore received an extraordinary amount of rainfall, measuring 272mm, within a span of just nine hours. This excessive rainfall has resulted in urban flooding, and the canal has also overflowed.

The Chief Minister highlighted that all cabinet members and administration officials are actively involved in addressing issues on the field. He also visited the city to personally oversee the relief operations.

The rain spell, which commenced earlier in the morning, severely affected the city, leading to its paralysis. The major roads and connecting streets experienced severe waterlogging, making commuting impossible for the people. The presence of knee-deep water on the roads exacerbated the situation, resulting in the breakdown of numerous vehicles.

Flood Warning

The latest meteorological analysis indicates the presence of a deep trough of the westerly wave, along with strong monsoon currents and an approaching upper air circulation. Consequently, there is an expectation of widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, including extremely heavy falls in scattered areas. The anticipated rainfall is expected to primarily affect the upper catchment areas of Rivers Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab, with a lesser impact on River Jhelum.

The advisory department states that there is a high likelihood of very high to exceptionally high-level flooding in River Chenab. The flood situation in rivers Ravi and Sutlej will depend on the releases from India. Anticipations suggest that there will be significant flooding in the nullahs of Rivers Ravi and Chenab as well.
