Relief for Electricity Users
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has acknowledged the financial strain faced by individuals using between 200 to 500 units of electricity and stated that the federal government is actively considering measures to alleviate their burden.
During his address at the Ulema-Mashaikh Conference in Islamabad, PM Sharif revealed that while the government has already allocated Rs50 billion from the developmental budget to support consumers using up to 200 units of electricity over the next three months, those consuming between 200 and 500 units still face high power costs.
He elaborated, “We have made significant cuts to our developmental budget to support those in the protected category consuming up to 200 units. However, the burden on those using between 200 and 500 units remains substantial.”
PM Sharif indicated that he, along with Nawaz Sharif, the coalition government, and the army chief, is actively working on a comprehensive plan to provide additional relief to those struggling with high electricity prices and inflation.
He expressed hope that this plan would help mitigate the financial pressures faced by poorer segments of society.
The Prime Minister assured that announcements regarding these relief measures from the provinces would be forthcoming. He also touched upon the necessity of turning to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to stabilize the economy.
Last month, the government had introduced a relief package aimed at those consuming fewer than 200 units of electricity per month, offering a reduction of up to Rs7 per unit to approximately 25 million domestic consumers for a three-month period ending in September.
At the conference, PM Sharif highlighted the unprecedented cooperation between the coalition government and national institutions. He praised the collaboration as exemplary and crucial for navigating the country through its current challenges.
The Prime Minister noted that the current level of unity and cooperation between political leaders and institutions is unmatched in his political experience.
He acknowledged the support of Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir and lauded it as a model for future collaboration.
PM Sharif emphasized the importance of learning from past mistakes and making sincere efforts to fulfill the vision of Pakistan envisioned by its founders, which involved significant sacrifices.
Looking ahead to the nation’s 77th Independence Day on August 14, PM Sharif remarked that while the country is still in the process of finding its path, achieving its goals remains possible through dedicated efforts and adherence to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.
He called on religious leaders to combat societal divisions and promote the Islamic economic system.
Additionally, PM Sharif condemned the misuse of social media to spread misinformation and propaganda, particularly criticizing those who disparage the sacrifices of the armed forces.
He described the events of May 9 as particularly tragic and likened them to the historical failures experienced during the 1971 crisis in Bangladesh.
He urged the Ulema to work towards societal unity and national development, asserting that no external force could hinder Pakistan’s progress if its people remained resolute in their goals.
