Government College University (GCU) Lahore has recently implemented a new dress code, which restricts students from wearing jeans, T-shirts, and jackets on campus. This change is part of a broader initiative by the university administration to enhance discipline and maintain a formal and respectful environment within the institution.
According to the official notification issued by GCU, all students, regardless of gender, are now required to follow specific dress guidelines. Male students must wear dress shirts and pants, while female students are expected to dress modestly, with the additional requirement of wearing a dupatta. The university emphasized that these measures are designed to promote a more disciplined and respectful atmosphere on campus, reflecting the values and traditions of the institution.
The notification also made it clear that non-compliance with the new dress code would result in strict disciplinary action. The administration has underscored its commitment to enforcing these guidelines to ensure that the university maintains a decorous and professional academic environment.
GCU Vice Chancellor Dr. Shazia Bashir explained the rationale behind the new dress code, highlighting the importance of fostering an environment that encourages discipline and appropriate behavior among students. Dr. Bashir emphasized that the decision was made with the intention of upholding the university’s esteemed academic standards and ensuring that students present themselves in a manner befitting an institution of higher learning.
“It is inappropriate for female students to wear T-shirts and tights at the university,” Dr. Bashir remarked, underscoring the need for modest and professional attire. She also stressed the importance of male students dressing formally, as it reflects the academic integrity and the prestigious reputation of GCU.
The new dress code has sparked discussions among the student body, with some students expressing concerns about the restrictions, while others support the move as a step towards preserving the university’s traditional values.
