ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistani diplomat Abdul Basit has claimed that Ambassador (R) Jalil Abbas Jilani was being named as the caretaker prime minister of Pakistan.
Sources indicate that Jilani emerged as a strong candidate for the caretaker prime minister role. These sources also disclosed that he (Jilani) reached the Prime Minister House this afternoon.
He had scheduled a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to reports.
“Congratulations to Ambassador (R) Jalil Abbas Jilani on his appointment as caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan. A proud moment for the Foreign Service of Pakistan,” Basit, who himself was an ambassador during his long career, said in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
The president will select the caretaker prime minister in consultation with the outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Leader of the Opposition, Raja Riaz. They are scheduled to commence their consultations today.
Who is Jalil Abbas Jilani
Jalil Abbas Jilani served as Pakistan’s ambassador to several countries, including the United States. He then took on the role of foreign secretary. He holds a law degree from Oxford University and an M.Sc degree in Defense and Strategic Studies.
Following his retirement, he engaged in work at the Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies, a thinktank associated with the Pakistan Air Force.
