Fire Incident at Karachi University’s Mass Communication Department

KARACHI: A fire erupted on Monday morning in the Mass Communication Department of Karachi University, a renowned institution that has shaped the careers of numerous journalists across Pakistan.

The incident occurred around 10 am in the department’s audio-visual room, where an air conditioner malfunctioned and caught fire during a class session, according to Professor Dr. Asmat Ara, the department’s chairperson.

Students who were present at the time were promptly evacuated as the flames spread, causing damage to furniture and equipment.

Dr. Asmat Ara mentioned that initial efforts to contain the fire were made by department staff, later assisted by the university’s fire rescue team and campus security.

Additional support was provided by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) fire department, which successfully extinguished the blaze. The university’s electrical engineering department conducted a survey to assess any structural damage caused by the fire.

Despite the disruption, Dr. Ara assured that the situation was quickly brought under control, allowing for the resumption of morning and evening classes as scheduled.

She emphasized that while the incident caused some disruption, no injuries were reported among the students or faculty.

The Mass Communication Department at Karachi University holds a significant place in the country’s academic and journalistic landscape.
