Eidul Azha Expected on June 17 in Pakistan, Says Meteorological Department

KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced on Wednesday that Eidul Azha is expected to be observed in Pakistan on Monday, June 17.

According to the Climate Data Processing Centre, the Zilhajj moon is most likely to be sighted on Friday, June 7, which would lead to the celebration of Eidul Azha on June 17. The center’s data indicates that the moon will rise at 5:38 PM on June 6, with sunset expected at 7:20 PM. The moon should be visible for 72 minutes after sunset.

Eidul Azha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the two major Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims worldwide. This festival honors Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command. According to Islamic tradition, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead, of sparing Ibrahim’s son.

The festival is traditionally marked by the slaughter of animals such as goats, sheep, cows, and camels. The meat from these animals is then divided into three parts: one-third for the family, one-third for relatives and friends, and one-third for the less fortunate. This act of sharing symbolizes charity, community, and equality.

In Pakistan, Eidul Azha is a significant public holiday, celebrated with fervor and devotion. Preparations for the festival often begin weeks in advance, with markets bustling with people buying sacrificial animals. On the day of Eid, special prayers are held in mosques, and the sacrificial rites commence, continuing over the three days of the festival.

This annual observance not only commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion but also reinforces the values of sacrifice, compassion, and generosity within the Muslim community.
